Saturday, June 14th is Flag Day.
In honor of our nation’s flag and all that it represents the Parks Committee has put together a program that will be held at Veterans’ Garden at the West side of Carpenter Park. The program will begin at 10:00 a.m. All the elected officials of Carpentersville have been invited to attend this tribute. Please mark your calendars and plan on attending this program.
I have the high honor of reading a poem that I have prepared for this occasion. I do encourage you to come and bring your children. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we can have a fine gathering to pay tribute to our flag. I look forward to seeing you there. I’ve included the text of my poem that I’ve written especially for this event.
Old Glory
Flag Day, June 14th the day we’ve set aside
For our banner we hold high with honor and so much pride
Freedom’s price has yet been paid; sacrifice abounds
The bugler calls to us from the hillside to all the towns
Adorned with 50 brilliant stars and 13 flowing stripes
Our fallen brave, their caskets it does drape, while marchers play their pipes
A tribute to those who’ve been called to fight, until victory has been won
Over the battlefield Old Glory waves against the mid-day sun
Tears clouding her eyes, a widow clutches Old Glory to her breast
For her fallen husband had given his all; now he’s laid to rest
Words of comfort are expressed from a grateful nation,
Now this solemn tribute has passed on to our generation
America, a beacon of hope, a shinning city on a hill
Let’s hope and pray that light forever shines and always will
Old Glory waves o’er the home of the brave
Always mindful of what we have to protect and save
Today while we mark another Flag Day, let’s count our blessings
America, salute Old Glory, while a nurse changes a soldier’s dressings
Freedom’s quest summons us to a higher purpose, one that gives pause
We battle not for self, but for a more noble cause …
